From Technical Writer to Business Owner: The Moment That Changed My Life

When I immigrated to Canada, like many newcomers, I arrived with hopes, dreams, and a desire to build a better life. I was fortunate to land a position as a technical writer with Union Gas, a highly respected company at the time. It was a secure job, and I was grateful for it. But even then, I felt the quiet pull of entrepreneurship.

Juggling two full-time commitments

During my second year at Union Gas, I took a bold step and launched my own business. What followed was a period of intense hustle. I was working two full-time jobs. Some days stretched to 17 hours. It was exciting but also exhausting. I was pushing myself to the limit, fuelled by a vision of creating something of my own.

Eventually, I reached a point where I couldn’t continue at that pace. I had to make a choice. Either I would commit fully to my stable corporate job or take the plunge into the unknown world of business ownership.

Seeking wisdom: a conversation that changed everything

Uncertain about the next step, I turned to my corporate lawyer, Sergio. He was not only knowledgeable but also wise. I shared my dilemma with him: “I can’t go on like this. I need to choose. But what if I leave my job and my business fails?”

Sergio asked me one simple question that changed my life: “What would you do if you went bankrupt?”

I paused and thought about it. My answer was quick but came from a place of clarity: “I’ll start another business.”

A moment of awakening

That exchange was an awakening. It wasn’t just about business. It was about identity. I realized I was built to be an entrepreneur. I had the mindset, the drive, and the resilience to handle setbacks. I didn’t fear failure because I had confidence in my ability to rebuild.

Taking the leap: quitting my job

In July 2007, I made the leap. I left my full-time position and committed entirely to my business. It was a defining moment. I have never been an employee since that day.

Since then, I’ve grown my company into a thriving enterprise in downtown Toronto. We’ve helped clients from more than 60 countries. We’ve supported over 600 other businesses in establishing themselves across Canada. And I’ve had the privilege of supporting my family, creating jobs, and living a life aligned with my purpose.

Lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs

Every entrepreneur faces a crossroads at some point in their journey. The fear of leaving stability behind is a genuine concern. But so is the potential for something greater. If you’re standing at that intersection today, ask yourself the same question that Sergio asked me: What would you do if you went bankrupt?

If your answer reveals a resilient spirit and a willingness to rebuild, then maybe, just maybe, you’re built for business too.
